Google Map Saver

Announcement!

Both GMS and GMS.NET confirmed to work on Windows 10 Release.

As many of you noticed since Google changed their maps GMS experienced problems.

If you have problems with GMS please try GMS.NET from www.codres.de/gms-net-download.

Please let me know by writing a comment if GMS.NET works better for you.

TIP: To get rid of the bogus icons on top of the map, simply click the content of the map, once, before saving. Please Note that GMS.NET requires Microsoft.NET v3.5+

What’s new?

It seems that TIFF format is more optimized for huge map sizes so please save as TIFF for big resolution.

Google Map Saver (GMS) offers you an easy way to download big Google Maps on your PC as JPEG, PNG-8, PNG-24, BMP or Targa files. GMS is light (only ~400 KBytes) and very easy to run since doesn’t have an installer. Just download it on your Desktop and Run-It!

GMS runs on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

GMS is 100% free, no spyware!

Removing the Watermark

Just follow the steps described in the image bellow in order to activate your free copy.

GMS is not Crippleware. The superimposed watermark  can be removed, easily, with three clicks. It is there only that you visit the About Box 😉

By Downloading and running GMS you agree with the license and with the “Fair Use” terms listed bellow.

Fair Use

I was trying to be fair, in relation with you, the user, by giving this application for free, so please try the same and please follow my recomandations:

  • Do not use maps created with GMS for commercial purpose.
  • Do not use the downloaded maps in conjunctions with navigation hardware.
  • Even if it is possible to retrieve greather than 4000×4000 pixels maps, I don’t recommend you to do that.
  • Do not try to automate GMS with automation tools (e.g. AutoHotKey). You will break the Google’s Terms of Use (bulk download).
  • Do not remove the Google overlays and copyright notes.

Q&A

  • Q: Can I run it on Linux or Mac?
A: I think you can by using WineHQ.
  • Q: I think your tool breaks the Google’s Terms of Use
A: I was thinking about this before I made the application public. What I can tell you, is that I’m not using any tricks (e.g. direct and bulk downloads) to get the maps. I’m simply using the a standard Google URL via IFRAME. Google allows us to see bigger maps. I found is possible, I did it. In GMS one user request = one Google Maps access. No bulk download.
  • Q: There are other ways to save Google maps?
A: Yes! They are. Some are commercial OR there are some free Firefox hacks. I’m not competing theese solutions. I just wanted something simple AND free.
  • Q: How can I contribute?
A: Make some comments, give some suggestions, spread the word, digg it or…
  • Q: Will you keep this tool free?
    A:  Yes

GMS is Beta! If you find any bugs or you have any ideas please comment.

User’s Tips

Tip: To save huge maps (e.g. if you get Out Of Memory error), Save the map as BMP. To convert the BMP to other formats (e.g. JPG or PNG) use the free Paint.NET software.
If you get a yellow box saying Loading… e.g. on WinXP Home SP3 Here’s a hint from GMS user Simple Simon’s Snail who found a workaround (Thanks Simon!)
Tip from MuhammadA lot of people has been asking about loading Google My Place into this map. I’ve found the solution. You’ll need Fireshot extension/addon for Firefox/Chrome.

1. First, find out the address of your Google My Place, should look like this:http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&dg=feature&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=213353022109462492729.0004ef95b833ce8288e9f
2. Just enter any location in the “Location/POI” and the resolution you wanted. As for “Zoom” and “Map Type” you can adjust later.
3. Once the image appear, right-click on the small white gap between the map image and the blue bar, select view source.
4. Once the Notepad appear, replace the address starting with http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&q=(your search Location/POI) with your Google My Places address.
5. Save As your Notepad and select “All Files”, Your filename should end with .htm
6. Open your .htm file with your web browser.
7. Adjust your “Zoom” and “Map Type” to your likening.
8. Once you have decide the final view of your map, from the dropdown menu of your Fireshot extension/addon select “Capture entire page and…”, “Save” , select format you want.
9. Done.

  1. Thanks for your work
but how can I accuritly identify the coordinations for certain single city (e.g. zagazig , Egypt ) by using this program

    waiting for ur reply, thanks

  2. @hatemnady: The focus of GMS is to save the maps for off-line use. If you want to get the accurat coordinates of a specific city/location please use Google Maps or Google Earth.

  3. When I try to save a map gms seem to work. But satellite view dos not seem to work- at all zoom settings its says there is no imagery for this zzom elevel. Is is how its suppose to be? Any way to save large satellite image? Mihow

  4. Dear Daniel,

Your software may do a great job but I’m not sure yet.

When I download the map of an area let’s say at a resolution of 4096 x 4096 with 15x zoom, GMS loads a pretty big Google map of the area that you have to scroll horizontally and vertically to assess different parts of the map. However when I click to save the image, only a window size of the whole map (about 1400×700, 96dpi on my 15” laptop) will be saved to the hard.

Is there a problem with my system that is not saving the whole downloaded map or it is just the way GMS works? If this is true, then you have to take tens of screen shots and somehow join them together in Photoshop or so to make the whole map for offline use. This is a very time consuming long process that can be done on Google maps itself. I wonder what is the use of GMS then? Appreciate prompt replies, especially from yourself.

  5. help pleasee theres a bug with this app

  6. Interessant. Kommt hier noch ein weiterer Beitrag? Würde gern mehr darüber wissen. Kannst du mir per E-Mail eine Antwort geben?

  7. Thanks about this application. I made one like this… It’s a good trick to use a webbrowser component in a picturebox (and it’s works nice) but is there anyway to use multi sockets like firefox…?
first I tried to connect to google map servers khm0/khm1/khm2/khm3. but there were 152,022 pictures for my city map with zoom 19.
and it’s too slow for big pictures.

  8. I used it to download whole Manhattan in a minute.
    I thank you very much.
I’ll het it printed out and start studying. 😉

  9. I would like to center the map on coordinates I get from google maps, but it seems to me that the coordinate system used by gms are different: am I missing something?

  10. Is there anyway that to set an alternate URL so that this can work on a mashup?

  11. Excellent, that’s like 10 out of 10 or A+
    Keep the great work.

  12. Hello!

Great Tool, thanks! Is there a possibility to save a map *without* a placemarker in the center of the maps?

    thanks

    Kurt

  13. I would like a lot more bloggers might compose sites like this which are literally entertaining you just read. With all the nonsense floating round over the internet, it truly is extraordinary to see a webpage like this instead

  14. Thank you for this blog. Thats all I can say. You most definitely have made this blog into something thats eye opening and important.

  16. Hey, big thanks for hard work of deverlopers, really cool program. But i have error “out of memory” when I try to save a 12k x 12k pixels with jpeg format, so how to fix this error?

  17. Tip: Instead of the program work only with geographic coordinates, is how it captures the image of a selected region in the same way as does the GOOGLE MAP BUDDY? The program is excellent, congratulations.

  18. You you should change the blog subject title Google Map Saver | GUI.brush Blog to something more better for your content you create. I loved the post all the same.

  19. Great program. Lets me avoid dirty hacks I’ve used in the past. Please add the ability to “navigate” that is bump 1 or more tiles in any direction. Trying to manipulate the coordinate pair sucks.
